Take It to a Real Synth
Everything you've learned on the SB-1 transfers to any synthesizer ever made, the knobs just wear different clothes. The best place to prove it is Vital: a professional wavetable synth used on real records, and completely free at vital.audio. Download it, open it in your DAW (or standalone), and use this map.
| On the SB-1 | In Vital | What's new there |
|---|---|---|
| VCO-1 / VCO-2 waveform | OSC 1 / OSC 2 panels | Each oscillator is a full wavetable, the vertical frame slider is our Wavetable Lab's Position knob |
| Unison | UNISON voices + detune, per oscillator | Up to 16 voices, with stereo spread |
| Noise | SMP (sampler) slot | Ships with noise samples; can load any sample |
| VCF cutoff / reso / type | FILTER 1 panel | More shapes, plus per-oscillator routing |
| ENV / VCA (ADSR) | ENV 1 (hard-wired to volume) | ENV 2, 3… are free, drag one onto any knob, like Env Amt but universal |
| LFO + destination switch | LFO 1–8: drag the LFO tile onto any control | Drawable LFO shapes; our green patch cable, generalized to everything |
| Filter Env Amt | Drag ENV 2 onto filter cutoff | The drag amount ring = our Env Amt knob |
| Glide | PORTAMENTO (bottom-left of Advanced) | Legato and auto modes |
| Drive & Delay | EFFECTS tab | Full rack: chorus, phaser, reverb, EQ, compressor |
On your own: the graduation exercise, no training wheels:
- Rebuild the SB-1's Init patch in Vital: one saw, low-pass at ~3 kHz, snappy ADSR.
- Rebuild your favorite Ear Gym round from memory.
- Make the wobble bass from the bass lesson, LFO tile dragged onto filter cutoff.
- Then break free: drag an LFO onto wavetable position: the one move Vital has that the SB-1 doesn't, and exactly what the wavetable lesson prepared you for.
The real lesson: when you open any new synth, don't read the manual first. Find the oscillators, find the filter, find the envelopes, find what modulates what. Every synth is the same machine wearing a different faceplate, and you already know the machine.
Checkpoint
In Vital you want each note to open the filter with a bright snap, like the SB-1's Env Amt. What's the move?
